Can I donate items to the centre?
Yes, you can! Some items like the perishable food can be taken directly to the centre and stored in our Food Bank. Some items like meat we are unable to take due to the hazards of food poisoning and contamination when storing fresh meat requires licensing that we do not have for our Food Bank. Other items such as fresh milk or produce can be taken to our centre. We don’t usually accept lollies as this may not be healthy in large quantities but make exceptions around holidays such as Easter and Christmas.

Are there specific items that you need all the time?

Items that run quickly through are:
-          Nappies for all ages
-          Toilet paper
-          Canned goods and starches like pasta and rice

If you wanted to enquire about what we are short on currently, please call Kurbingui Main Office: 31564800.

Do you prefer certain quantities?
We prefer smaller size quantities of items as they are easier to disperse into a hamper. We do not bulk purchase our goods as this can be upsetting to our Elders that experienced rationing when they were living on missions and were given insufficient amounts to live on. For example, we would rather a little box of twenty tea bags rather than a one hundred box. We can still donate the big box to a big family but to be more cost effective and share as much as we can, the little boxes makes it easier

Do you take broken sealed items?
This varies from situation to situation. If someone is donating an item that they had at home, we cannot guarantee that it hasn’t been contaminated due to bacteria or allergies or whether the product has expired. However, if there was a product from the shop that is still suitable for resale, for example a cereal box that has been crushed but the plastic packaging has remained shut, we can still use that. I would follow a guide of “if you wouldn’t eat, would you expect someone else to eat it?” and to contact a Kurbingui staff member to double check

The bin is pretty full, when can you pick it up?
Contact Taigum Square centre management or one of the Kurbingui staff and we will collect it as soon as possible. Sometimes we are busy assisting clients and may not be able to pick it up immediately but will do our best to give you a time frame of when to pick it up.

Do you take other items such as furniture or school supplies?
We certainly do! We advertise items that our clients need on Givit, an organisation that aims to take second hand goods and vouchers to support Australians that need these goods. We maybe able to use it or you might find another organisation you can support with your donation. Definitely have a look at the website sometime if you have any donations that we wouldn’t take in the bin. These items must be in good condition and we will engage with the donator about whether we can take it and how we will pick it up as per Givit guidelines. You can find more on Givit’s website https://www.givit.org.au/

Do you take gift vouchers?
Yes we do, however we would only accept a donation of either an online voucher emailed to us or directly through Givit or a physical one handed in to our Head Office while adhering to covid safety guidelines. We do not accept any that enable the purchase of alcohol but we also use these to either donate to our families directly or for us to go on a shop for the Food Bank to get specific items we maybe lacking or for other events in our program such as school packs for Back To School.

Do you take different items throughout the year?
Yes we do, we want our families to feel at ease at holiday times so we also take other donations relating to holidays such as we accept toys around Christmas times as gifts for children and adults, we take school supplies at the start of the year for Back To School etc. You can always call and ask whether we are accepting any particular items

Can I pass on your details to a customer?
Please encourage them to call our main office first and they can directly call either Leah or the main office. Due to the safety of our clients, we cannot freely hand out our contact information especially without our expressed permission. The Main Office will be able to contact us during business hours and we can get back to you as soon as possible.

Do you want the donations in bags?
Yes please! We will reuse the bags to either deliver the hampers to families that are taking public transport or to a singular client. Please ensure that these bags are clean and free of debris. We will take plastic or fabric, as long as they are strong enough to handle a load of shopping

Can I claim my donation on tax?
It is possible. We are a listed under the ATO and Australian Government as a Deductible Gift Recipient. I cannot guarantee what can be claimed and these details would need to be verified with your tax professional whether it can be allowed or not. Keep a copy of your receipt and check with your tax professional to ask whether this is valid or not. I would also look at the ATO’s website on gifts and donations for more information https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/income-and-deductions/deductions-you-can-claim/other-deductions/gifts-and-donations/

Can you accept donations at Kurbingui Main Office?
Yes,!! This first needs to be verified at the Main Office and with Leah so that they know to expect the donator to arrive and what they are donating. We must know what to expect so that we can keep our clients safe and respect their privacy, even at times when there isn’t an active covid outbreak so please ensure you don’t show up when you are sick, symptomatic or been near someone who has.
